Cinco de Mayo, meaning Fifth of May in Spanish, commemorates the Mexican army's surprising victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Although the date is often misunderstood, it is not Mexican Independence Day, which falls in September. In Mexico itself the day is a modest regional observance, mostly in and around Puebla, but in the United States it has grown into a widespread celebration of Mexican heritage and culture.

The holiday is celebrated most enthusiastically in the United States, where Mexican American communities began marking the date in the 1860s, partly inspired by the battle's symbolism of the underdog defeating a powerful empire. California residents celebrated within weeks of the battle, and the tradition spread through the twentieth century, boosted in the 1980s by beer brands and restaurants that turned the day into a mainstream party. Today schools, cities, and bars across America join in.

Typical celebrations feature mariachi music, folklórico dancing, parades, Mexican cuisine, and, for adults, margaritas and Mexican beer. Carnivals, street festivals, and cultural education events highlight Mexican traditions, foods, and history. In Puebla, Mexico, the day includes military parades and battle reenactments honoring the outnumbered troops who held off a French assault widely considered one of the most improbable victories of the era.

History of Cinco de Mayo

On May 5, 1862, roughly 4,000 Mexican soldiers under General Ignacio Zaragoza faced a French force of about 6,000 near the city of Puebla. France, seeking to collect debts and expand its influence in Mexico, had landed troops the previous year. Against the odds, the Mexican army repelled the assault, and the victory became an instant symbol of resistance. The triumph was short-lived, as France later captured Mexico City and installed Maximilian I as emperor, but the Battle of Puebla retained its inspirational power.

Mexican American communities in California celebrated the victory within weeks, and the date became an anchor of pride during the American Civil War era, when the Union also worried about French influence in Mexico. The modern party atmosphere developed largely in the United States during the twentieth century, and especially from the 1980s onward, when marketing campaigns transformed a regional commemoration into one of the biggest Mexican cultural celebrations north of the border.
